This publication further opens up a dialogue and study I initially explored through my recent exhibition, ‘Walking Sticks & Canes’. The booklet features 18 designs staged at the show, the visions behind what this essential tool may be, and includes extended research in an essay by Marco Sammicheli.
The “walking stick,” the object examined in this small publication, is a stimulating example of the designer’s constant process of confrontation with the given.
Though simple in appearance, the shape of the walking stick poses questions of functional and material properties as a prerequisite for new inter- pretations and innovations. The walking stick offers an opportunity for designers to explore the suitability and nature of materials, the appli- cation of additional uses and properties and the variation of ergonomic specifications.
Use and application are central principles of every design method, be it in the design of a chair,
a spectacle frame, or a bicycle.
